Installing Fedora 28 Workstation
Installing Fedora 28 Workstation
Fedora 28 Workstation is a Linux distribution developed and supported by the Fedora Project which is an Open Source project formed by Red Hat and volunteers. Fedora 28 Workstation is the latest version of Fedora (released April 2018). Fedora 28 Workstation comes with the GNOME 3.28 desktop. Libre Office 6 (Full Office Suite), Firefox Web Browser, Evolution Email Client and the RhythmBox Music Player. The installation media will first start in a Live environment where you can try out the Operating system without committing to an installation. In the following example I am installing the 64bit Live version. Fedora 28 Workstation is available for download from the following location: Download Fedora 28 Workstation From the above link, you can choose which version of Fedora you wish to download (Workstation, Server or Atomic). Click on the 'Workstation' edition and then choose 'Download'. By default the 64 bit version is offered, however, you may select a 32bit version from the section 'Other Downloads'.
Once you have downloaded your selected version of the Fedora Workstation, you will need to burn this iso image to a DVD. For DVD burning software, search for 'dvd iso burning software' in the search box located above. Your system may already come with the necessary CD/DVD burning software installed such as 'Brasero, K3B, Nero, CDBurnerXP or Roxio'. Once you have successfully burned your chosen 'iso' image of Fedora 28, you will need to leave the DVD in the DVD drive and reboot your system (assuming this is your intended installation target). If you are installing to a 'Virtual' environment, simply copy the downloaded 'iso' image to a folder that can be accessed by your virtualisation software. If you are booting from the DVD, you may need to modify your system's BIOS settings. This can be done as the system starts by pressing the appropriate key. On many systems this key will be 'F8', 'F11' , 'F12' or another key. Most systems display a message indicating which key needs to be pressed when they are booted. Once you have access to your BIOS settings, you will need to modify the boot order (sequence) that your system goes through. You will need to specify CD/DVD as the first boot option (before your hard drive). Once you have made this change, you can reboot your system and follow the instructions below. Starting Fedora 28
Once your system has booted, you will see an initial start-up screen similar to the one below. Simply select the option 'Start Fedora-Workstation-Live 28'. (This option will be automatically selected after several seconds if no keys are pressed). Fedora Live Desktop Loading
As the 'Live' desktop environment loads, progress is indicated by a progress bar. Shortly after you will be presented with a 'live desktop' as per the image below. Welcome to Fedora![]()
At this screen, you have two options. You can either install the Fedora 28 Operating System to your hard drive or choose the 'Try Fedora' option. In the following example, I have chosen the 'Install to Hard Drive' option. The option 'Try Fedora' allows you to try out Fedora 28 without installing any information to your hard drive. This option is useful for checking compatibility with your current systems hardware. Click on the relevant image to make your choice. Welcome to Fedora 28

This screen gives you the ability to add additional keyboard layouts. To add an additional layout, click on the 'Plus +' button in the lower left corner. This will then activate a pop up menu listing additional keyboard settings. If you wish to remove a keyboard layout, simply highlight the option and click on the 'Minus -' option to remove. At any time, you may test your keyboard settings by typing into the 'Text Box' to the right of the screen. Once you are happy with your selection(s), click on the 'Done' button in the upper left hand corner. Time and Date
If your time and date settings were not detected automatically, you can adjust these settings from this screen. Either click on the map or use the pull down menus to select your location. The date/time can be adjusted from the menus located at the bottom of this screen. Once you have made your selection, click 'Done' to continue with the installation. Begin Installation
